One day after school Peyton and our next door neighbor were jumping on the trampoline. This was their warm-up activity before starting on homework. I was in the house and could hear Peyton screaming in pain.....the kind of pain that when you hear it you know something bad just happened. I came outside to see how bad it really was. I could tell from the way he couldn't step on it, it was bad but I tried to tell him that I have done this many times to my foot, that it was just a sprain, and that he just needed to walk it off.
Well I got him to start on his homework and was really hoping that with that distraction and a little time he would be fine. After finishing his homework hours later, he came limping/hopping back out to the living room and I thought "OH BOY, it's bad"! I had him sit in the recliner so I could see how it looked and by this time it was pretty swollen :( I felt SO bad! Definitely not feeling like the mother of the year. When Tim got home we were debating on what to do, is it fine or is it broken? Our Bishop is an ER doctor so I called to get his opinion about that to do. He was out and about and was really close to our house so he offered to stop by to take a look. His advice was that since the pain was so close to where the growth plates are, he really needed to get X-rays.
Here is the tricky thing about X-rays and growth plates. Growth plates are made of cartilage so they don't even show up in the X-ray..... His Dr. decided that he fractured his growth plate which is technically just a really bad sprain because it isn't bone, but that it will actually heal slower than a bone does. This green cast was his first cast and the Dr. told us to come back in three weeks to get it taken off. So three weeks later we went back so excited to be done with this only to be told that it was still swollen and hurting where it shouldn't be hurting:( We were SO disappointed to have to get another cast for three more weeks.....I honestly wanted to cry. When Pey came to the realization that he would now have it on over his Birthday he just lost it. He had big plans of going to Sky High (a big trampoline place) with his friends for his birthday. I told him we would go to Petaulma and celebrate his birthday with Grandma and Grandpa.....that definitely helped the situation:)
Here is cast #2....since the Dr. could tell how bummed out he was to have to get another one, she asked the guy who did the casting let him choose two colors. Originally it was 49ers colors, then he discovered that it was also Darthmal colors and thought it was totally cool:) When we went back to get it off he was actually sad to see it go and so they gave it to him as a souvenir. Lucky me....how do I ever get rid of that?
